**Fernando Alonso Celebrates Milestone of 400 F1 Races**
As Fernando Alonso gears up for the Mexico City Grand Prix, the legendary driver takes a moment to reflect on his illustrious Formula 1 career, preparing to make history with his 400th race appearance. Debuting as a teenager with Minardi in 2001, Alonso has since driven for iconic teams like Renault, McLaren, and Ferrari. Now at 43, he has recently signed a fresh contract with Aston Martin, aiming to add to his two world championships from 2005 and 2006, especially with Adrian Newey set to join from Red Bull, boosting the team's prospects.
With an impressive record of 22 pole positions, 32 race wins, 106 podium finishes, and over 2,300 points, Alonso will further cement his legacy at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez this weekend. Marking this monumental occasion, he joined Tom Clarkson on the F1 "Beyond The Grid" podcast, discussing his enduring passion for the sport. "To reach 400 now is a big number," Alonso noted, acknowledging the exhaustive demands of a 24-race season but emphasizing the joy he finds in racing. "It's a way of demonstrating my passion for the sport and for F1."
Reflecting on his younger self, Alonso recounted his early days with Minardi and his unexpected decision to continue racing beyond 2009. Initially envisioning retirement at the end of his three-year deal with McLaren in 2007, his journey took various turns after a challenging season with the team. "In 2001, I was not really thinking too much in the future," he shared, referring to his debut season. "The dream was coming alive, driving [in] F1, the first race."
Alonso revealed that by the time he signed with McLaren, he planned to retire by 2009. "I was 99% sure that 2009 would be my last F1 season," he said. "I already fulfilled my dream. This is beyond my wildest imagination to be an F1 champion, so what else can I do here?" Despite these plans, his passion for racing and unforeseen circumstances extended his career well beyond his initial expectations.
Looking back, Alonso reflects on his growth and evolution in the sport. While his younger self may not have anticipated such a long and rewarding career, the 43-year-old driver now stands as testament to enduring talent and determination in the high-speed world of Formula 1.
