### FDA Upgrades Carolina Tomatoes Recall to Highest Level Over Salmonella Risk

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified a recall for tomatoes distributed in North and South Carolina, initially announced on May 2, due to potential salmonella contamination concerns. This recall, which also affects Georgia, was escalated on May 28 to a Class I recall – the most serious category.

A Class I recall is defined by the FDA as one where there is a "reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death." The tomatoes in question were produced and recalled by Williams Farms Repack LLC and shipped out to distributors between April 23 and April 28. They were sold both individually and in three-count trays under the labels Williams Farms Repack or H&C Farms.

Consumers who purchased these tomatoes are strongly advised not to consume them. Instead, they should discard the produce or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. No illnesses or deaths have been reported in connection with the recall as of the initial May 2 announcement.

Concerns of contamination stem from salmonella, a bacteria known to cause infections that can range from mild to severe. Particularly at risk are young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The presence of salmonella can lead to significant health issues affecting the intestinal tract, according to health officials.

If you have questions or require further clarification, you can contact Jason Breland with Williams Farms Repack. Consumers are urged to take this recall seriously and follow appropriate measures to ensure their safety and prevent health risks.
