### Palm Springs International Airport Secures $6 Million Grant for Terminal Upgrades

Palm Springs International Airport is set to receive a significant boost in the form of a $6 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to enhance its terminal facilities. This funding is part of a larger allocation of approximately $970 million distributed to various airports nationwide for infrastructure improvements.

The grant for Palm Springs will specifically be used for the demolition of existing foundations and exterior building walls, as well as the construction of a new foundation to support the expansion of the existing terminal. Additionally, the airport plans to upgrade its outgoing baggage handling system as part of this expansion effort.

This terminal enhancement project is distinct from the airport’s broader master plan update, which includes further terminal expansions and the construction of a rental car facility, designed to meet the anticipated growth in traveler numbers over the next two decades. The airport has a four-year timeline to utilize these newly awarded funds and aims to commence construction in 2025. However, the project will move forward only after the Palm Springs City Council formally accepts the funding.

Airport Executive Director Harry Barrett emphasized the importance of this grant, stating, "After two consecutive years of record passenger numbers at PSP, this funding is vital to our mission to deliver a smooth and efficient travel experience for our guests. This grant from the FAA allows us to expand our outbound baggage area to meet current and future demand, supporting our airport's growth and our community's needs."

Nationally, a total of 125 airport-related projects received funding from this initiative. U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg highlighted the broader impact of these improvements, noting their role in enhancing local economies, job creation, and ensuring safer and more efficient travel.

Several other Southern California airports also benefited from the FAA’s grant program. Los Angeles International Airport garnered $30 million for its Terminal Roadways Project, covering a wide array of infrastructural improvements. John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana received $10.6 million for the installation of six earthquate-safe, energy-saving replacement escalators. Hollywood Burbank Airport was allocated $9.3 million for structural components of a new passenger terminal. Meanwhile, San Diego International Airport obtained nearly $12.1 million for new terminal construction, including the installation of passenger boarding bridges and other foundational work.

FAA Associate Administrator for Airports Shannetta R. Griffin spoke to the importance of this funding, underscoring its role in passenger safety, comfort, and convenience, as well as its ability to provide good-paying jobs and stimulate local economies.
