Members of the climate justice group Extinction Rebellion caused a commotion during a showing of "An Enemy of the People" on Broadway, prompting one of the play's stars, Michael Imperioli, to personally intervene. The incident occurred on Thursday, with videos and reports of the disturbance emerging on social media.
During a pivotal scene featuring actor Jeremy Strong from "Succession," Extinction Rebellion activists disrupted the performance by shouting, "There is no Broadway on a dead planet." As tensions escalated, one of the activists, who identified themselves as a theater artist, engaged in a verbal confrontation with Imperioli, who fired back, "Go back to drama school!"
Remaining in character, Imperioli made the bold move to exit the stage and assist security in removing one of the disruptive activists. In a moment reminiscent of his iconic character Christopher Moltisanti from "The Sopranos," Imperioli elicited cheers from the audience, with one woman calling out, "Christopher!"
Taking to Instagram afterwards, Imperioli addressed the incident, stating, "Tonight was wild. No hard feelings Extinction Rebellion crew. Michael is on your side but Mayor Stockmann is not," referring to the character he portrays in the Henrik Ibsen revival.
The disruption caused a stir among theatergoers, sparking discussions about the role of activism and climate change in the arts. While some supported the group's message and their use of performance spaces to draw attention to environmental issues, others raised concerns about the impact on the immersive experience of watching a play.
The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing debate surrounding climate justice and the lengths individuals and groups are willing to go to raise awareness about environmental threats.
