### Exciting Stargazing: Comet Atlas and a Spectacular Supermoon Shine Over Massachusetts
BOSTON - Stargazing enthusiasts in Massachusetts have something extraordinary to look forward to this week. Comet Atlas, which has been teasing local skies for weeks, has now become visible in the west during the evenings. Previously obscured by clouds, the comet is now expected to shine bright and clear in the upcoming nights.
Starting about 45 minutes after sunset on Tuesday, observers will need an unobstructed view of the western horizon to catch sight of Comet Atlas. To locate it, one can first find Venus, the brightest object in that part of the sky, and then look to the upper right, about two fists' width. With its extended tail, the comet should be visible to the naked eye.
However, some clouds are expected on Tuesday afternoon, possibly lingering through sunset and obstructing the view for some in southern New England. Even if Tuesday doesn't work out, stargazers will have multiple chances throughout the week to glimpse the celestial visitor. Each subsequent night, the comet will be slightly higher in the sky but will diminish in brightness as it moves further from Earth. Later in the week, binoculars might become necessary for a better view.
Adding to the astronomical excitement, the upcoming Hunter's supermoon will illuminate the sky later this week. This supermoon, the closest full moon of 2024, will coincide with sunset, making the comet harder to spot due to the increased brightness of the night sky. This supermoon, referred to as a perigean full moon, will be a spectacular sight, appearing 30% brighter and 15% larger than an average full moon, as it will be only about 222,000 miles away from Earth.
The supermoon will also bring the highest tides of the year, potentially causing minor coastal flooding starting Thursday and continuing for a few days. Thankfully, no storms are expected to further affect the tides during this period.
Comet Atlas and the Hunter's supermoon present a perfect opportunity for night sky enthusiasts to witness a rare celestial phenomenon. Happy viewing to all!
