In a tragic incident that unfolded during a routine traffic stop, an ex-convict has been charged with murder and gun possession after allegedly gunning down an NYPD officer. The accused, 34-year-old Guy Rivera, was officially charged on Thursday with the murder of Police Officer Jonathan Diller, as well as attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

The incident occurred when Officer Diller approached a car idling at a bus stop around 5:50 p.m. Rivera, who was a passenger in the vehicle, allegedly opened fire and shot Officer Diller in the stomach. Although the officer valiantly fought for his life, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

Authorities wasted no time in apprehending the suspects involved. Lindy Jones, the 41-year-old driver of the car, was also arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon. Both Rivera and Jones have extensive criminal records and have previously served time in state prison, according to available records.

Law enforcement sources revealed that Officer Diller and his colleagues were initially questioning another individual in an unrelated incident when they noticed Rivera behaving suspiciously as he walked back to the car at the bus stop. A sergeant at the scene approached Rivera and Jones to inquire about their activities, but the situation quickly escalated when Rivera opened fire, striking Officer Diller under his bullet-proof vest.

In a courageous act, despite being mortally wounded, Officer Diller managed to grab the gun from Rivera while the other officers returned fire. The swift response from the law enforcement team prevented further harm, but tragically, Officer Diller's injuries were too severe to overcome.

Interestingly, during the investigation, authorities discovered that Jones had concealed a shiv in his rectum, adding another layer of criminality to the charges against him.

Investigative sources believe that the pair had been planning a robbery, which was thwarted by Officer Diller and his fellow officers who intervened in the situation. The loss of Officer Diller, a 31-year-old married father, has deeply shaken the law enforcement community and the wider public, leading to an outpouring of grief and support.

Coincidentally, the charges against Rivera were filed just hours before Officer Diller's wake in Massapequa, which was attended by former President Donald Trump. This solemn occasion served as a reminder of the risks and sacrifices police officers make in their daily efforts to ensure public safety.

Rivera, with a history of 21 prior arrests, had been on parole until last year following a drug conviction that led to a five-year prison sentence. Now, he faces a long legal journey as he prepares to defend himself against the serious charges leveled against him.

The criminal justice system will now begin its work in seeking justice for Officer Diller and providing solace to his grieving family. The tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the ongoing challenges of maintaining community safety.
