Evacuations Ordered for Tampa Bay as Tropical Storm Debby Approaches
Tropical Storm Debby is making its way towards the Tampa Bay area, prompting officials to issue evacuation orders for several counties. The storm is expected to bring storm surge, heavy rain, and high winds, posing a significant risk to residents and properties.
As of 5:50 p.m., a mandatory evacuation has been issued for Zone A in Citrus County, which encompasses the City of Crystal River and areas west of US 19, along with some low-lying areas east of US 19. Crystal River Mayor Joe Meek took to social media, urging residents in Zone A to heed the warnings and follow evacuation directions.
In Pasco, Hernando, and Manatee Counties, voluntary evacuations are currently in effect. The Pasco County Government has advised residents to consider evacuating if certain criteria are met, such as living in flood-prone areas or mobile homes. Those who cannot find shelter with family or friends can head to the Fasano Regional Hurricane Center, which will open its doors at 6 p.m.
Hernando County has designated Zone A as the area for voluntary evacuations, targeting coastal and low-lying regions as well as manufactured homes. The West Hernando Middle School has been designated as a shelter for special needs residents, the general population, and individuals with pets.
In Manatee County, residents in Coastal Level A are being encouraged to evacuate. An additional shelter has been set up at Miller Elementary School, which will open at 5 p.m. Those seeking shelter earlier can go to Nolan Middle School, which has been open since noon.
Tropical Storm Debby, which officially formed over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico, is projected to intensify into a Category 1 hurricane as it approaches the Big Bend region of Florida. The National Hurricane Center warns residents to stay informed and prepared for potential impacts.
