An urgent evacuation order has been issued for residents near the intersection of US-50 and OH-128 in Whitewater Township, following a dangerous chemical leak. The Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has instructed individuals in the vicinity to evacuate immediately due to the presence of styrene, a toxic and flammable chemical that was released into the air. The leak is reported to be coming from a tank car but is currently slowing down, as confirmed by Miami Township Fire and EMS.
In response to the hazardous situation, residents within a half-mile radius of the railyard by US-50, OH-128, and Valley Junction Road are urged to seek shelter and leave the area promptly. Officials have advised individuals to stay indoors, close all doors and windows, seal off their living spaces, and turn off their heating systems until further notice. Those affected by the evacuation order have been directed to seek refuge at the Whitewater Township Community Center or Miami Township Hall.
Hamilton County EMA has been actively monitoring the situation and has reported that the release valve has closed, with ongoing monitoring to ensure the situation remains contained before the all-clear can be given. Residents are assured that once the area is declared safe and roads are reopened, they will be permitted to return home without risk. Styrene, the chemical in question, is a colorless, flammable liquid known for its use in the manufacturing of plastics, rubber, and various products.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences highlights the volatile nature of styrene, its sweet odor, and its prevalence in the production of numerous everyday items such as insulation, automobile parts, and food containers. Exposure to styrene can pose serious health risks, making it imperative for individuals in the affected area to adhere to the evacuation order and prioritize their safety. With swift action and coordinated efforts by emergency response teams, the situation is being closely monitored to prevent any further harm to the community.
