In a statement published by the EU's External Action Service (EEAS) on Saturday, EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell charged that Israeli army fire resulted in the deaths of Palestinian civilians during aid delivery operations in Gaza earlier this week. Borrell called for an international investigation into the incident, which he claimed took the lives of over a hundred civilians and left many others wounded.

According to Borrell, the tragic incident occurred when civilians were desperately trying to access food from a convoy. He stated that the Israeli army's firing against these civilians as they attempted to obtain food supplies was "unjustifiable." Borrell laid the responsibility for the incident on the restrictions imposed by the Israeli army and the obstructions by violent extremists to the supply of humanitarian aid.

Borrell's remarks came after several EU leaders, including European Council President Charles Michel, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and French President Emmanuel Macron, condemned the killing of 115 Palestinians in Gaza City who were trying to obtain food from delivery trucks. They also called for an international investigation, with Macron explicitly blaming the Israeli army for the incident.

In response to the tragic events, the United States has decided to intervene. On Friday, the US military coordinated airdrops of humanitarian aid into Gaza. On Saturday, several US military C-130 cargo planes delivered 66 bundles, containing approximately 38,000 meals, into the enclave. US officials cited by the Associated Press confirmed the successful delivery.

As calls for an international investigation grow, the focus is shifting to ensure accountability for the incident and to prevent such tragedies from recurring in the future. The international community awaits further developments and actions to facilitate the smooth flow of essential aid to the people of Gaza.
