In Enid, Oklahoma, a fierce battle is unfolding as the city braces itself for an upcoming recall election aimed at removing Commissioner Judd Blevins from office. The controversy revolves around allegations of racism and ties to a white nationalist group, which have deeply divided this small rural town.

At a recent candidate forum, residents in favor of Blevins' ouster confronted him directly about his alleged connection to a white nationalist organization. Despite attempts to dismiss the accusations, the issue has become a contentious point of contention within the community.

Adam Kemp, communities correspondent for "NewsHour," shed light on the origins of this recall effort. The Enid Social Justice Committee, composed of concerned citizens, initiated the movement due to their disquietude over Blevins' election. Two members of the committee, Connie Vickers and Nancy Presnall, confronted Blevins with a striking enlarged image allegedly depicting him at the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. Blevins evaded the question and reportedly fled from the confrontation.

Regarding Blevins' past association, it was disclosed during his campaign for city commissioner that he had ties with white nationalist groups, including Identity Evropa. These revelations were first published by a local newspaper in 2023, exposing his participation in the Unite the Right rally. When citizens confronted him about these affiliations, Blevins neither confirmed nor denied his involvement.

Recently, at a forum in Enid, Blevins finally confirmed attending the Charlottesville rally. He justified his presence by expressing opposition to the removal of historically significant statues, asserting that the preservation of American history and heritage was essential to him. However, when asked to denounce white nationalism, Blevins responded by stating he couldn't disavow something he never was.

The potential impact of the recall election on the community has raised concerns among Enid residents. Many feel a sense of embarrassment and dread at the prospect of Blevins remaining in office. The fear of tarnishing the city's reputation and its ability to attract businesses and maintain a strong relationship with Vance Air Force Base has become a pressing issue for locals.

This isolated incident in Enid resonates with a larger national context. Experts, such as Pete Simi, a researcher on white nationalism, highlight the growing trend of white supremacists seeking political power on a local level. The election of President Donald Trump in 2016 has emboldened these groups, with local elections becoming a crucial target for their agenda. Simi emphasizes the danger of legitimizing and normalizing white supremacy, posing a significant threat to the nation at large.

As the recall election approaches, Enid remains a community deeply polarized by the allegations surrounding Commissioner Judd Blevins. The outcome of the vote will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences, not only for the city but also as a reflection of the broader challenges posed by the rise of white nationalism in the United States.
