According to Forbes' estimates, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk experienced the largest decline in net worth among billionaires worldwide during the first six months of 2023. The stock market's incredible growth brought great fortune to many ultra-rich individuals, but Musk faced a rare setback. However, the tech mogul may still have a chance to boost his fortunes with a substantial bonus from Tesla shareholders.
While major stock indexes like the S&P 500, Europe's Stoxx 600, Japan's Nikkei 225, and India's Nifty 50 reached new all-time highs, one person emerged as the biggest winner in terms of wealth this year. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, saw his net worth skyrocket by $64.1 billion, propelling him from the 27th-wealthiest person in the world to the 14th.
The list of high-growth individuals was dominated by leaders in the artificial intelligence sector, benefitting from the ongoing AI boom. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's wealth surged by $61.5 billion, followed by Dell CEO Michael Dell, whose net worth increased by $35.8 billion. Oracle chairman Larry Ellison enjoyed a $37.7 billion gain, while Google co-founder Larry Page's wealth rose by $33.1 billion, rounding out the top five gainers.
Across Asia, Mukesh Ambani emerged as the region's biggest gainer with a $22.4 billion upswing in wealth. In Europe, the continent's top winner was Amancio Ortega, who added $10.7 billion to his net worth. South America's biggest earner was Eduardo Saverin, accumulating $8.1 billion in newfound riches, while Aliko Dangote was Africa's top wealth increaser with a gain of $3.9 billion.
In contrast, Elon Musk's net worth suffered a significant decline, leaving him $99 billion less wealthy than his peak of approximately $320 billion in November 2021. Tesla's stock has plunged more than 50% from its all-time high during that same period, while the S&P 500 has experienced a growth of around 22%.
Interestingly, excluding Elon Musk, the net worth of the 25 richest individuals at the end of 2023 grew by an average of $14.4 billion throughout the first half of this year, reaffirming the wealth accumulation trend among the ultra-rich.
While Elon Musk faced a setback in his net worth growth, the tech sector proved to be a wealth generator for many other billionaires. Time will tell if Tesla's fortunes will provide Musk with an opportunity to reclaim his lost wealth and continue his journey as one of the most influential figures in the tech industry.
