In a brief but intense power play, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was dethroned by Elon Musk as the richest person in the United States on Wednesday, only to have Musk reclaim the title shortly after, according to Forbes' calculations. This dramatic shift in fortune comes as Tesla's stock market struggles take a toll on Musk's net worth.

Earlier this year, Musk had vowed to send Bezos a silver medal, along with a giant statue of the digit '2', if he surpassed the Amazon founder as the world's richest man. However, it seems Bezos will have to wait a little longer for this surprising gift.

Musk's fortune underwent a staggering $55 billion decline on Wednesday, compared to its value at the end of 2023. This sharp decrease can be attributed to Tesla's plunging share prices, which have fallen nearly 30% year-to-date. As Musk holds roughly 21% equity stake in the electric vehicle maker, this decline significantly impacted his overall net worth.

The combined net worth of Bezos and Musk amounts to approximately $390 billion, which is roughly equivalent to Hong Kong's gross domestic product in 2023. Musk's fortune is largely tied to his Tesla stake, accounting for about two-thirds of his wealth. On the other hand, Bezos' net worth is influenced by his approximately 10% stake in Amazon, which represents around 85% of his overall wealth.

While Amazon's stock has experienced a remarkable 17% increase this year and an 86% surge over the last 12 months, Tesla has faced a decline of -28% and -8% in year-to-date and 12-month returns, respectively. Investors have shown growing concerns about Tesla's diminishing profit margins, favoring Amazon's promising performance in the market.

Beyond their financial competition, Bezos and Musk are also engaged in a fierce rivalry in the realm of private space travel. Bezos' Blue Origin and Musk's SpaceX are vying for valuable contracts from NASA, symbolizing their ambition to dominate the future of space exploration.

As the battle for supremacy between these two billionaire entrepreneurs unfolds, the world eagerly watches their fortunes rise and fall, enticed by an ongoing saga of wealth and innovation.
