Tech mogul Elon Musk has acquiesced to Brazilian Supreme Court orders by appointing a legal representative for his social media platform, X, in Brazil. Judge Alexandre de Moraes has requested further proof regarding the power of attorney granted to the appointed lawyer. X has been banned in Brazil since August due to noncompliance with court mandates to name a new legal representative for the company within a specified timeframe.
The Supreme Court of Brazil has issued a subsequent request for additional documentation from Elon Musk, the owner of X. The platform was shut down in the country following its failure to adhere to a court order to appoint a legal representative for the Brazilian operations. Musk initially spoke out against the ruling but later stated that the company had indeed appointed a lawyer, Rachel Conceicao, to represent X in Brazil. However, Judge de Moraes demanded further paperwork and provided a five-day deadline for X to submit documentation confirming the appointment of Conceicao as the company's legal representative in the nation.
In August, Justice de Moraes imposed a suspension on X until it complied with the Supreme Court's directives, including the nomination of a legal representative in Brazil and the payment of fines totaling 18.35 million reals. Assets of X and Musk's Starlink were frozen to ensure payment of the fines. The dispute stems from Brazilian law mandating internet companies to have a legal representative in the country. X had removed its previous legal representative after facing threats of arrest, leading to the current legal predicament.
