EF1 Tornado Causes Damage in Harrisburg and Surrounding Areas

An EF1 tornado with peak wind speeds of 105 miles per hour touched down in Dauphin County, causing significant damage in Harrisburg and neighboring townships, according to confirmation from the National Weather Service.

The tornado, spanning 300 yards at its widest, descended near Gibson Street in Harrisburg around 4:33 a.m. on Friday morning. It then proceeded to travel a distance of 3.48 miles north, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, as reported by the National Weather Service.

Initial reports indicate that the tornado blew in a set of overhead doors at a warehouse located near the intersection of Gibson Boulevard and Bobali Drive in Swatara Township. Moreover, it uprooted trees along its path and tore the roof off of the Brethren in Christ Church on Derry Street.

Further damages were reported in the Bellevue Park neighborhood of Harrisburg, where the tornado caused extensive tree damage. Dozens of trees were uprooted or snapped off due to the severe winds. Homes along Midland Road, Bellevue Road, and Pentwater Road suffered damage from falling trees and debris.

As the tornado crossed Market Street, it inflicted damage to trees on the property of the Civil War Museum and East Harrisburg Cemetery. The last area with visible damage was north of Elmerton Avenue near the entrance to the Pennsylvania State Police Headquarters.

The National Weather Service categorizes EF1 tornadoes based on wind speeds ranging from 86 to 110 mph. This tornado falls within this classification on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which ranks tornadoes from EF0 to the most severe EF5.

Local authorities and emergency services are currently assessing the extent of the damage and working to restore normalcy in the affected areas. Residents are urged to exercise caution and follow any guidance provided by authorities.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties have been reported thus far. The community remains resilient in the face of this natural disaster and will work together to recover and rebuild from the tornado's impact.
