In a thrilling turn of events, the Edmonton Oilers have battled their way back from a 3-0 deficit in their best-of-seven series against their opponent. While this feat is not entirely unprecedented, it is an accomplishment that has only been achieved a handful of times in the history of the NHL.

Out of the 211 opportunities where teams have faced a 3-0 series deficit, this marks the 10th time that a team has fought back to force a decisive Game 7. However, the historical data shows that the momentum gained from three straight wins does not always carry over into the final game. Only four out of the nine teams that previously forced a Game 7 after trailing 3-0 have managed to turn the series around and secure victory.

The Los Angeles Kings were the last team to achieve this remarkable feat, accomplishing it during the 2014 first round against the San Jose Sharks. After falling into a 1-0 hole early in the second period, the Kings rallied back by netting a tying goal from Drew Doughty and a tiebreaking goal by Anze Kopitar in the late stages of the second period. In the third period, Los Angeles added three more goals, including two empty-netters, to secure a 5-1 victory. Goaltender Jonathan Quick played an outstanding game, making 39 saves.

The Detroit Red Wings also managed to fight their way back in a similar situation, winning three consecutive tight games to level the series against the San Jose Sharks. However, in their Game 7 match, the Sharks took an early lead with first-period goals from Devin Setoguchi and Logan Couture. Despite a valiant effort from the Red Wings, including a late goal by Daniel Briere to tie the game, the Sharks held on for a 3-2 victory. Antti Niemi's stellar goaltending performance of 38 saves played a crucial role in securing the win.

The Chicago Blackhawks, defending champions at the time, faced an uphill battle against the Presidents' Trophy winners. They managed to force a Game 7 on the road, with Jonathan Toews scoring a short-handed goal late in the third period to tie the game. However, the Vancouver Canucks killed off an early overtime penalty and ultimately clinched the victory with a goal from Alex Burrows. Roberto Luongo's outstanding performance in net, making 31 saves, helped the Canucks advace to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately fell short against the Boston Bruins.

The Philadelphia Flyers also etched their name in the history books with an incredible comeback after falling behind 3-0 both in the series and in Game 7 against the Boston Bruins. In less than 15 minutes, the Flyers found themselves facing a 3-0 deficit, but they rallied back to tie the game late in the second period and secured a win in the third with a power-play goal from Simon Gagne. Despite ultimately losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final, the Flyers' resilience resonated throughout the league.

Lastly, the New York Islanders achieved an impressive feat by mounting a comeback against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the quarterfinals. After falling behind 3-0, head coach Al Arbour made the brave decision to bench Billy Smith in favor of Chico Resch. The move paid off massively, as the Islanders won four straight games, culminating in a thrilling 1-0 victory on the road in Game 7. Ed Westphal's goal with just over five minutes remaining and Resch's exceptional shutout performance of 30 saves sealed the Islanders' incredible series turnaround.

As the Edmonton Oilers prepare for their own Game 7 encounter, they are aware of the historical significance of their situation and the challenges ahead. The odds may be against them, given that only four out of the nine previous teams who forced a Game 7 managed to complete the comeback. However, if history is any indication, the Oilers have a chance to join this exclusive club of teams who defied the odds and emerged victorious from a 3-0 series deficit. Fans and hockey enthusiasts alike eagerly await the outcome of this thrilling battle on the ice.
