The epic science-fiction film has exceeded expectations and is now aiming for a lifetime haul of $600 million, despite facing delays.

Following the success of its predecessor, Dune: Part Two picks up the story of Paul Atreides, who embarks on a transformative journey, ultimately becoming a messiah-like figure. The film has been received positively by audiences and critics alike, paving the way for a potential third adaptation.

Within its first weekend of release, Dune: Part Two grossed an impressive $180 million worldwide. Now, after playing in over 70 territories for six days, the film has notched two major milestones. On Wednesday, it crossed the $100 million mark domestically, as well as the $200 million mark globally. Box office pundit Scott Mendelson estimates that the film's current global gross stands at approximately $217 million.

The prequel, Dune, released in 2021 amidst the pandemic, took over a month to surpass $100 million domestically and concluded its global run with around $400 million. The film's recent one-week re-release added an additional $30 million to its worldwide haul. Despite its significant $165 million budget, Dune was considered a hit and lauded for rejuvenating theaters during a challenging period.

Dune: Part Two is not only the first Hollywood film of 2024 to cross the $100 million mark domestically but also the first to reach the $200 million milestone worldwide. However, it still trails behind four Chinese releases in this year's global chart. The film is set to open in China this weekend and in Japan the following week, bolstering its box office performance further.

With a reported budget of $190 million, Dune: Part Two is projected to easily surpass its predecessor in the upcoming weeks. Industry insiders estimate that the film's break-even point stands at $500 million. Mendelson has predicted a final global haul ranging between $570 million and $630 million, which would position it within the box office range of Timothée Chalamet's Wonka.

Remarkably, Dune: Part Two was originally scheduled to be released before Wonka; however, it faced delays due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in 2023. Had both films stuck to their original release dates, Chalamet could have achieved a staggering global box office haul of over $1 billion in the same calendar year.

Despite this, Dune: Part Two is expected to achieve a lifetime haul of over $600 million, cementing Chalamet's involvement in an exceptional box office success. With rave reviews, the film concludes Villeneuve's two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic novel, leaving the potential for a third film in the future. The director has expressed interest in adapting Herbert's "Dune: Messiah" but intends to focus on other projects before diving into it.

Dune: Part Two delves deeper into Paul Atreides' journey as he joins forces with Chani and the Fremen to seek revenge against those responsible for his family's destruction. It is currently screening in theaters, and fans eagerly anticipate further updates on its success.
