In a tragic incident, a man has been charged with murder and DUI in connection with a violent crash in Pomona that tragically claimed the lives of three women. The victims, who were returning home from a baby shower, were fatally injured in the collision, while two others, including a 12-year-old girl, sustained injuries.
The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Victor Siharath, stands accused of causing the devastating two-vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday night at the intersection of White Avenue and Phillips Boulevard. The collision, captured on surveillance video, occurred as a group of five individuals were making their way home from the celebratory event.
Family members have identified the deceased victims as Yesenia Olaez, 33; Lorena Morales, and Alejandra Olaez, 33. The tragic incident took place following a joyous baby shower organized for Morales' granddaughter.
Eye-witnesses reported that Siharath, a resident of Pomona, ran a red light directly before the collision, leading to his subsequent arrest at the accident scene. Juan Manuel "Jaime" Garcia, the husband of Lorena Morales and the front-seat passenger in the vehicle, was critically injured and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The collision also left a 12-year-old girl, Noemi Olaez, hospitalized in the intensive care unit. She is the daughter of Alejandra Olaez, one of the victims. The entire community mourns the senseless loss of life and sends their heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and survivors impacted by this unimaginable tragedy.
District Attorney George Gascón, in a news conference, expressed his deep sympathy, stating, "There are no words to express the heartbreak that Mr. Siharath's actions have caused these victims' families and community. Our hearts go out to the grieving families and the survivors as they attempt to cope with this unimaginable tragedy."
It was revealed that Siharath had a prior DUI conviction in San Bernardino County and was warned about the potential consequences of causing a death while driving under the influence. As a result, he now faces three counts of murder and one count of driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury. If convicted, Siharath could receive a maximum sentence of life in prison. He is currently being held without bail.
The loss of Yesenia Olaez is especially devastating, as she had been in the process of adopting her 11-year-old nephew, Brian Gonzalez. The young boy, speaking at a vigil held in memory of his aunt, described her as "a loving mother."
In response to the tragedy, GoFundMe pages have been established to assist the grieving families of the three women who lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident.
The local community continues to come together, offering support and strength during this difficult time, as they remember the lives lost and strive to prevent such devastating accidents caused by DUI.
