Doug Emhoff, the husband of Kamala Harris, took the stage at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday, delivering a heartfelt speech on behalf of his wife as she takes on the role of the party's nominee for president. Emhoff, who is 59 years old, shares a special bond with Harris as they were born exactly one week apart in October of 1964.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Emhoff moved to Southern California with his family as a teenager. He attended Agoura High School in Agoura Hills, California, and pursued his higher education at Cal-State Northridge and USC, where he obtained his undergraduate and juris-doctorate degrees respectively. Starting his law career in 1990, Emhoff worked at DLA Piper, one of the world's largest law firms, and represented prominent clients including studio executives, production companies, national brands, and even a former NFL athlete.
Driving his passion for justice and equality, Emhoff took a leave of absence from his job when Harris joined the Democratic ticket. Leveraging his connections in the entertainment industry, he played an instrumental role in supporting his wife's successful campaign for U.S. Senate in California in 2016.
Following the 2020 election, Emhoff has taken up teaching law classes at Georgetown University, showcasing his dedication to imparting knowledge and guiding future legal professionals. Additionally, he has been an advocate for women's rights and access to legal aid, shedding light on issues of antisemitism and mental health. Emhoff, who is Jewish, uses his platform to address important social matters.
Emhoff and Harris' love story began on a blind date in 2013, set up by Harris' best friend, Chrisette Hudlin, who was being represented by Emhoff. The couple tied the knot in 2014 in a beautiful ceremony officiated by Harris' sister, Maya, in Santa Barbara, California. Notably, Kamala later officiated the wedding of Emhoff's son, Cole, in 2023, demonstrating the strong bond within their blended family.
As Harris prepares to address the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, she and Emhoff will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. Emhoff, who was previously married to Kerstin Emhoff, has two children from his previous marriage - Cole (age 29) and Ella (age 25). Both children have been supportive of Harris' political aspirations and have embraced their stepmother, affectionately referring to her as "Momala."
Doug Emhoff's presence and unwavering support alongside Kamala Harris have not only solidified their personal bond but also exemplified their commitment to public service and advocacy. As the nation looks ahead to the upcoming presidential election, Emhoff's dedication to his wife's campaign and his tireless efforts to uplift marginalized communities continue to be notable aspects of his journey.
