In an effort to strengthen their pitching rotation, the Los Angeles Dodgers have completed a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies, acquiring right-hander Connor Brogdon in exchange for minor league southpaw Benony Robles. The trade was announced by both teams.
Brogdon, who had previously been designated for assignment by the Phillies, will now join the Dodgers and switch teams for the first time in his professional career. The 10th-round draft pick in 2017, Brogdon showcased promise during his time with the Phillies, recording a solid 3.55 ERA, a 24.1% strikeout rate, and a 7.9% walk rate over 142 innings from 2020 to 2023.
However, Brogdon's performance took a slight dip last season, resulting in a lower strikeout rate of 20.5% and an increased walk rate of 10.2%. He also struggled with giving up home runs, allowing five in just 29 innings of work. These factors, combined with a two-mile velocity drop on his fastball, led the Phillies to option Brogdon to Triple-A in June.
Despite making only three appearances in the current season, Brogdon was unable to find his stride and was hit hard for six earned runs in just two innings. With a disappointing 27.00 ERA on his record, the Phillies decided to designate him for assignment due to his lack of minor league options.
Now, Brogdon will have the opportunity to revive his career with the Dodgers, a team known for their ability to rehabilitate pitchers. The change of scenery may be just what he needs to regain his form.
In return, the Phillies receive minor league lefty Benony Robles, who began his professional career with the Dodgers' Dominican Summer League squad at the age of 18. Robles, though still developing his control, showcased an impressive ability to generate strikeouts, boasting a staggering 38.7% strikeout rate in 32 2/3 innings at high-A Great Lakes last season.
While Robles had a higher walk rate of 13.9%, resulting in a 3.86 ERA, there is potential for the 23-year-old to become a reliable relief weapon if he can minimize his free passes.
The trade between the Dodgers and the Phillies not only addresses the needs of both teams but also provides an opportunity for Brogdon and Robles to make an impact in their respective new environments. Only time will tell how this trade will ultimately pan out for both sides.
