Dodgers Claim Brent Honeywell Jr. off Waivers, Bolstering Bullpen for Playoff Push

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a roster move to strengthen their bullpen as they claimed right-hander Brent Honeywell Jr. off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The news was reported by MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Honeywell, 29, is a former top prospect in the Tampa Bay Rays system. He had his fair share of setbacks due to injuries, including Tommy John surgery and multiple elbow fractures, which limited his playing time to just 103 1/3 innings from 2018 to 2022.

Despite the challenges, Honeywell managed to make his major league debut last year with the San Diego Padres. He held his own with a decent 4.05 ERA in 46 2/3 innings of work. However, he was eventually released by the Padres and signed with the White Sox. His stint with the White Sox was less than impressive, as he allowed seven runs in just 5 2/3 innings before becoming a free agent in the offseason.

In February, Honeywell signed a minor league deal with the Pirates and started the season in their Triple-A affiliate. Although his performance was not outstanding, he earned a brief call-up to the majors, where he showcased his potential with a 2.70 ERA in 3 1/3 frames.

Unfortunately, Honeywell's time with the Pirates was short-lived as he was designated for assignment just days after being called up. However, the right-hander now has another opportunity to prove himself at the big league level with the Dodgers.

The Dodgers, who have one of the best bullpens in baseball overall this season, have struggled slightly in recent weeks. Their relief ERA of 3.46 is solid, but their 4.18 FIP suggests possible regression as the season progresses.

Adding Honeywell to their bullpen provides the Dodgers with another reliable arm, particularly as they approach the trade deadline. While Honeywell may not be the strikeout pitcher he once was, his time with the Padres last year demonstrated that he can still be effective in middle relief.

The move comes as the Dodgers aim to keep their relief options fresh and solidify their postseason chances. With Honeywell, they have a potential hidden gem who can help bolster their bullpen for the stretch run.

The Dodgers have not yet announced the corresponding move to make room for Honeywell on the 40-man roster. As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see if the Dodgers make further additions to strengthen their pitching staff and make a strong playoff push.

In the meantime, Honeywell will have the opportunity to tap into the talent that made him a top prospect in Tampa Bay. While it has been a few years since his standout performance in Triple-A, the Dodgers are hopeful that Honeywell can contribute to their success in the second half of the season.
