At least 29 people have tragically lost their lives and one individual has been injured in a fire that engulfed a nightclub in central Istanbul during daytime renovation work. The incident occurred at a 16-storey building located in the residential Gayrettepe district, prompting a swift response from firefighters.

The fire broke out on Tuesday, at approximately 12:47 local time (09:47 GMT), on the ground floor of the building. Thick plumes of smoke and flames were seen billowing out of upper storey windows, as emergency services worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control.

According to the office of Governor Davut Gul, the number of casualties has sadly risen to 29, with one person still receiving treatment at the hospital. Despite the firefighters' efforts, lives were lost not only during the fire but also after victims were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

An immediate investigation has been launched into the incident, leading to the issuance of arrest warrants for five individuals, including the club's management and the person responsible for the ongoing renovations, as reported by the state media.

The nightclub had been closed for repairs during the holy month of Ramadan, as preparations were being made for the upcoming Eid holiday. This devastating event occurred as the community prepared to celebrate this important religious occasion.

As a precautionary measure, authorities cut off power, water, and gas supplies to the affected area, ensuring the safety of nearby residents who were promptly evacuated.

The intensity of the fire, combined with the fact that it occurred during daytime renovations, has raised questions about the safety measures in place and the adherence to proper protocols. It is now imperative for authorities to thoroughly investigate the causes of this tragic incident and ensure that such incidents can be prevented in the future.

Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this heart-wrenching event. The community of Istanbul, together with the nation, is united in mourning the loss of innocent lives.
