In a move to find a spark in their struggling lineup, the Detroit Tigers have made a roster change by calling up rookie outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy. This decision comes as former top prospect Spencer Torkelson has been struggling at the plate, leading to his demotion to the minor leagues.
Torkelson, who was expected to become a power threat in the Tigers' lineup, has failed to live up to expectations this season. The 24-year-old has been batting a disappointing .201 with a .597 OPS, only managing to hit four home runs and striking out 56 times in 54 games.
The Tigers had high hopes for Torkelson, especially after his impressive performance in the second half of the 2023 season, where he hit 31 home runs. However, he has struggled to find his form, hitting his first homer of the season on May 12 and continuing to bat a meager .152 since then, with more strikeouts than hits.
Unfortunately, all the underlying statistics further confirm Torkelson's slump. With an expected batting average of just .192 and below-average hard-hit metrics, Torkelson's swing appears disjointed. He is striking out too frequently, not getting enough walks, and producing too many weak fly balls.
In hopes of helping Torkelson turn things around, the Tigers have decided to send him to the minor leagues for a reset in Toledo. Concurrently, they are giving Justyn-Henry Malloy the opportunity to showcase his skills at the major league level. Malloy, while not known for his defensive prowess, has displayed a promising bat that seems ready for the MLB stage.
With Kerry Carpenter currently on the injured list, Malloy is expected to receive an extended opportunity to prove himself as a viable option at first base. The Tigers will likely use a first baseman by committee approach, with third baseman Gio Urshela and Mark Canha also getting opportunities at the position.
The Tigers hope that Malloy's combination of power and on-base skills can inject some much-needed life into their struggling offense. While Malloy's defensive abilities may be a concern, his readiness with the bat could provide the team with some valuable offensive production.
As Detroit looks to bounce back from their offensive struggles, the promotion of Justyn-Henry Malloy signifies a new opportunity for the rookie to make his mark in the majors. Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Torkelson as he works to correct the issues plaguing his swing and regain his form in the minor leagues.
