In a move to turn their fortunes around, the Detroit Pistons are reportedly on the verge of finalizing a five-year deal with J.B. Bickerstaff to become their next head coach. The decision comes just a week after the team's president, Trajan Langdon, fired Monty Williams following a disappointing season that resulted in a franchise-low 14 wins. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news.
Bickerstaff's accolades include leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to back-to-back playoff appearances. However, despite his success, the Cavaliers decided to part ways with him and search for a new coaching voice. This marks the fourth consecutive head coaching hire by the Detroit Pistons, with each appointment having prior experience with multiple winning seasons and playoff appearances. Unfortunately, previous coaches such as Stan Van Gundy, Dwane Casey, and Monty Williams were unable to bring about the desired results in Detroit.
According to sources at The Athletic, Bickerstaff was the top choice on Langdon's candidate list from the outset of the hiring process. Langdon was looking for a coach with experience, leadership skills, and the ability to mold young players into a cohesive team. The deal is said to be four guaranteed years with a team option for a fifth season.
Sean Sweeney was also a strong contender for the position, impressing the front office during the selection process. However, it was ultimately Bickerstaff who emerged as the preferred candidate.
Bickerstaff brings with him extensive coaching experience, having served as an interim head coach with the Houston Rockets, an interim and full head coach with the Memphis Grizzlies, and an interim and then full head coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers. This opportunity with the Pistons marks the first time in his career that Bickerstaff will join an organization as head coach right from the beginning.
With the appointment of J.B. Bickerstaff, the Detroit Pistons are hoping to revitalize their team and regain their status as a competitive force in the NBA. Fans are eagerly anticipating the impact Bickerstaff will have on the young players and the overall trajectory of the team.
