The Detroit Lions have announced that legendary wide receiver Calvin Johnson will be inducted into their prestigious ring of honor, known as the "Pride of the Lions." The induction ceremony is set to take place during halftime of the Lions' "homecoming game" against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday, September 30.
Lions President and CEO Rod Wood expressed his excitement, stating, "We are thrilled to add Calvin Johnson Jr. to the Pride of the Lions. His dedication on the field and to the city of Detroit are legendary, and this honor is truly well-deserved. We take great pride in memorializing him inside Ford Field as a Detroit Lion."
The heartwarming moment of Johnson's induction was captured on video, as it unfolded during his celebrity golf outing on July 15. Lions chief operating officer Mike Disner and Lions legend Lomas Brown surprised Johnson with the news, resulting in his genuine and emotional reaction.
Starting from the Lions' first-round selection of Johnson in the 2007 NFL Draft as the second overall pick, he spent a remarkable nine years with the team. Throughout his career, Johnson achieved six Pro Bowl appearances and three All-Pro seasons. Notably, Johnson holds the NFL record for the most receiving yards in a single season, with an astonishing 1,964 yards in 2012.
Although Johnson's sudden retirement in 2016 initially led to a dispute with the Lions organization regarding his signing bonus, years of mending the relationship have brought him back into the fold. The upcoming induction into the Pride of the Lions truly signifies the culmination of their reconciliation.
Johnson's name will now grace the rafters at Ford Field, forever remembered as one of the greatest players in Lions history. The honor is further amplified by his recent induction as a first-ballot member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021.
Lions fans and football enthusiasts alike eagerly await the Week 4 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, where they can witness this incredible moment as Johnson takes his rightful place among the Lions' all-time greats.
As the countdown continues, anticipation builds for a night that will honor Calvin Johnson and immortalize his legacy as a Lion.
