The Detroit Lions concluded their training camp with an intense intra-squad scrimmage on Wednesday, providing a last opportunity for the starters to sharpen their skills before the preseason finale. However, the energy and excitement quickly turned into concern when standout offensive lineman Penei Sewell went down with a foot injury.

Sewell's injury occurred on the third play after the team returned from the simulated halftime break. While blocking for quarterback Jared Goff on an incomplete pass downfield, Sewell experienced discomfort and had to be attended to by trainers. He then limped to the sideline, where his shoe and sock were removed for closer examination of his left foot. Shortly after, Sewell made his way to the locker room with the assistance of a trainer.

The Detroit Lions have reported that Sewell, who is widely regarded as a crucial asset to the team, is currently undergoing evaluation for the foot injury. The 23-year-old offensive tackle has proved his worth over the past three seasons, starting in an impressive 50 out of 51 games at both left and right tackle positions. Sewell has never missed playing an offensive snap in the last two years, earning Pro Bowl selections and recently signing a lucrative four-year, $112 million contract extension.

Teammates expressed their concern for Sewell, recognizing his importance to the team's success. Safety Brian Branch affectionately referred to him as "our No. 1 offensive lineman" and expressed hope that the injury wouldn't prove to be significant. The Lions' second-year tackle, Colby Sorsdal, emphasized the unpredictable nature of the sport, acknowledging that injuries can happen to anyone at any time. Sorsdal stepped in to replace Sewell during the scrimmage.

In the midst of their cautious approach to managing injuries this preseason, Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism about the availability of most of his starters for the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 8. While several players sat out Wednesday's practice, including running back Craig Reynolds, whose lower-body injury was not elaborated upon, the team remains hopeful that their key contributors will be ready for the upcoming regular season.

As the evaluation process continues for Penei Sewell's foot injury, Lions fans and the organization alike are sending their well wishes and hoping for a speedy recovery for the talented offensive lineman.
