In a momentous day for the franchise, the Detroit Lions have cemented their future by securing two key players with massive contract extensions. Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell, both integral to the team's success, have now become the highest-paid wide receiver and offensive lineman in football, respectively.

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Amon-Ra St. Brown has been granted a four-year extension, while Penei Sewell has also received a record-breaking four-year extension. Sewell's deal is valued at a staggering $112 million, with $85 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman.

Previously, the highest-paid offensive lineman was Laremy Tunsil, who signed a three-year, $75 million contract with the Texans. However, Sewell's deal surpasses that, averaging $28 million a year, which is an unprecedented figure for the position.

Penei Sewell, who was the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has quickly solidified his place as the Lions' right tackle. Not only has he earned Pro Bowl honors twice in his three seasons, but he was also named first-team All-Pro in 2023 after being recognized as the best tackle in the league with a remarkable PFF grade of 92.8.

Sewell's on-field excellence is matched by his reliability, having missed only one game in his career. Furthermore, in the past two seasons, he hasn't missed a single snap, showcasing his durability and commitment to the team.

With both Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell now locked up for the foreseeable future, the Lions have secured the foundation of their franchise. The duo represents the start of a promising era of homegrown talent under General Manager Brad Holmes and Head Coach Dan Campbell.

In an update to Sewell's contract details, it was revealed that he will average $30 million per year over the first three new years of the deal. Additionally, the Lions exercised Sewell's fifth-year option, extending his contract to a total of six years, running through 2029. The Lions will pay approximately $63 million over the first three years of the contract, with a total of around $87 million over the first four years.

The contract for Penei Sewell also features a rolling guarantee structure, ensuring long-term stability for both the player and the franchise.

With these historic extensions, the Detroit Lions have made a resounding statement about their commitment to building a successful team. The future looks bright for the Lions as they rely on the exceptional talents of Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell to lead them to victory on the gridiron.
