The Detroit Lions have officially concluded their training camp practices for this year, with Wednesday's session being the final one. Originally, head coach Dan Campbell had planned for a high-intensity scrimmage, but due to the numerous injuries plaguing the team, they decided to scale back the intensity of the practice.

Before the practice began, Campbell announced their intentions to start with 9-on-7 drills, remove pads, and focus on one-on-one matchups between the first and second teams. He acknowledged that they had to make adjustments due to the injury situation, which he deemed as fine.

Despite the reduced intensity, there were still numerous team drills that took place during Wednesday's practice. In one notable drill involving safety pairings, C.J. Moore and Ifeatu Melifonwu worked together during 9-on-7s, while Kerby Joseph and Brandon Joseph saw significant time with the first team during team drills. Melifonwu also received some playing time with the first team.

Brandon Joseph's impressive performance throughout training camp earned him a temporary promotion in Brian Branch's absence. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn praised Joseph's intelligence and understanding of the game, stating that he acts as an extra coach on the field when working with younger players.

Linebacker Jack Campbell showcased his coverage skills during the 9-on-7 drills, demonstrating his aggression and violence as an off-ball run defender. Glenn highlighted Campbell's growth in coverage as a key aspect for his development in his second year. In one particular team drill, Campbell intercepted Jared Goff's pass after reading his eyes in a zone coverage situation.

Despite some inconsistencies, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown had a strong practice, securing the catch of the day with an impressive fade play for a two-point conversion. He also made a crucial play during a situational drill, catching a 21-yard crossing route that positioned the offense in the red zone.

St. Brown's performance highlighted his versatility, as he won in various ways throughout camp, not just through vertical routes or speed. His releases were improved, and his routes were sharper, although there were still occasional inconsistencies.

Defensive back Kindle Vildor also had an impressive day working with the first-team defense. He made a teach tape rep by breaking up a pass intended for Tom Kennedy and had a strong performance in coverage against St. Brown during a red zone play. Despite being lower on the depth chart, Vildor demonstrated his ability to perform at a high level alongside starters.

Although the Lions abandoned their plans for a scrimmage, they simulated a similar scenario by pitting the first-team offense against the first-team defense, while the second-teams took over at the point where the previous drive ended. The first-team offense struggled in this matchup, with Kerby Joseph recording a tackle for loss on the first play and Jared Goff throwing an interception on third down.

Hendon Hooker and the second-team offense capitalized on their opportunity, scoring on their very first play after Kaden Davis broke wide open for an easy touchdown reception. Essang Bassey, who recently joined the team, was unable to prevent the score as he trailed several yards behind Davis.

Despite facing challenges in coverage throughout the day, Bassey managed to make a brilliant pass breakup on an accurate pass intended for Tom Kennedy.

The Lions' first-team offense faced a crucial situation in their final drill: down by nine points, with 2:42 remaining on the clock, one timeout, and starting from their own 30-yard line. They managed to complete a 14-play touchdown drive, highlighted by key plays such as a turkey hole pass to Kalif Raymond for 21 yards, a fourth-down interference call that benefited them, a red zone sack by Aidan Hutchinson, and a fade touchdown to St. Brown in coverage by Kerby Joseph.

Despite facing adversity, the offense managed to pull within two points, ultimately winning the simulated game due to Jake Bates' successful 32-yard field goal as time expired.

Bates had mixed results during Wednesday's practice, making field goals from 32 and 35 yards and an extra point, but also missing an extra point and hitting the left upright on a 53-yard attempt.

Injuries at cornerback led to Loren Strickland filling in as the second-team nickel behind Amik Robertson. Steven Gilmore and Essang Bassey served as the second-team outside cornerbacks, while Vildor and Khalil Dorsey remained the current starters.

With the WR3 battle seemingly coming to an end, Kalif Raymond consistently played alongside St. Brown and Williams when the Lions went three wide, except in the red zone where Daurice Fountain occasionally replaced Raymond for a bigger target option.

As the Detroit Lions wrap up their training camp practices, they look forward to the upcoming season, hoping to build on their progress and overcome the challenges posed by their injury concerns.
