The Detroit Lions have fortified their defensive line with the selection of LSU defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo. In a trade with the Houston Texans, the Lions moved up in the sixth round, giving away picks 205 and 249 to secure Wingo's services.
Despite battling a lower-body injury that limited him to just eight games last season, Wingo displayed impressive performance on the field. He recorded 25 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks during his shortened campaign. In the previous year, Wingo showcased his strength and skill, accumulating 46 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss, and 3.0 sacks in 14 games.
Wingo's strength is evident even outside of football, as he holds high school squat records, according to The Athletic. Equipped with a powerful physique and quick feet, he frequently disrupts plays behind the line of scrimmage. At the NFL Scouting Combine, Wingo showcased his athleticism by running the 40-yard dash in 4.85 seconds, with a 1.63 10-yard split, at a weight of 284 pounds.
Beyond his physical abilities, Wingo's intangible qualities make him a valuable acquisition for the Lions. He served as a team captain at LSU, demonstrating his leadership qualities and mental fortitude. Despite his injury, he persevered to return and contribute in LSU's bowl game, a testament to his dedication and determination.
Wingo's versatility also makes him a valuable asset for the Lions. He is a three-down interior defender, averaging 55 defensive snaps per game over his two seasons at LSU. With Alim McNeill and DJ Reader slated as starters, the Lions had a need for depth at defensive tackle. While they have high hopes for Brodric Martin and a healthy Levi Onwuzurike, adding a player like Wingo provides healthy competition and bolsters the team's defensive rotation.
The Lions' investment in Wingo reflects their commitment to strengthen their defensive line. With his power, skills, and leadership qualities, Wingo has the potential to make a significant impact in the upcoming season. As the Lions continue to build their roster, the addition of Wingo signals their determination to field a formidable defense in the 2022 NFL season.
