In a recent episode of "Real Time," host Bill Maher expressed his elation over the Democrats' victory in flipping the immigration issue on Republicans following a special election in New York this week. The seat left vacant by ousted Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., was won by former Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi, who defeated Republican newcomer Mazi Pilip in a highly-contested race.

Maher highlighted Suozzi's win amid the immigration battle on Capitol Hill as a significant indicator that Democrats are now leading the charge on the issue. He noted that immigration has become the number one issue to voters, surpassing the economy in importance. Maher credited Chuck Schumer for skillfully navigating the issue, while criticizing Mitch McConnell for appearing to stumble in his political maneuvers.

The talk show host pointed out how Democrats called the bluff of Republicans on the immigration bill, which fell apart due to GOP opposition. Maher emphasized the strategic move made by Democrats, underlining that the victory of Suozzi, who ran on a platform advocating for strong positions on Israel and border closure, signifies a positive turn for the party.

Reiterating his past warnings about immigration being a weak spot for Democrats, Maher praised the recent developments as a substantial shift in the party's favor on the contentious issue. Despite previous concerns over the handling of the border crisis, Maher now sees the Democrats gaining traction and potentially having success on an issue that was once their Achilles' heel.
