Delta Air Lines Embraces Inclusive Language and Pursues Equity, says Chief Diversity Officer

In recent years, Delta Air Lines has made significant strides in embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion as part of its corporate agenda. The airline's Chief Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Social Impact Officer, Keyra Lynn Johnson, has been at the forefront of this transformative journey, advocating for language that is more inclusive and striving for equity at all levels of the company.

During a panel discussion with other DEI insiders in February 2021, Johnson highlighted the company's commitment to examining its gatehouse announcements, questioning whether the traditional phrase "ladies and gentlemen" is as gender-inclusive as it should be. This introspection led Delta to release an inclusive language guide in December 2020, counseling employees against using terminology that reinforces gender binaries.

A spokesperson from Delta emphasized the company's encouragement for employees to use inclusive language, recognizing the diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences of its global customer base. Delta aims to create an environment that is welcoming and inclusive for all.

Johnson also stressed the importance of Delta being an "antiracist company." This commitment aligns with the principles popularized by Ibram X. Kendi, who advocates that simply not being racist is not enough; one must actively work to combat racism. Johnson emphasized the need to actively seek diversity, pursue equity, and promote inclusion within the organization.

To achieve these goals, Delta has not only implemented recommendations for employees' communications but has also taken a top-down approach in its talent pipeline. Johnson emphasized the company's aim to be intentional about representation at every level of the company and to measure and address any representation gaps on a quarterly basis.

Moreover, Delta is extending its DEI efforts beyond its internal culture. Johnson revealed the airline's plans to evaluate its spending and support legislation that aims to address inequities. Delta aims to lend its voice and brand to issues of justice and equity, ensuring a positive impact both within and outside the organization.

However, despite Delta's commitment to fostering inclusivity, Johnson acknowledged that not all employees have embraced these changes comfortably. Normalizing conversations around diversity and inclusion remains an ongoing challenge for the company, as differing perspectives and levels of comfort exist among its workforce.

In response to questions about Johnson's leadership, Delta reiterated its commitment to being a workplace where everyone can thrive, reflecting the diverse customers and communities it serves globally.
