In an emotional night filled with nostalgia and heartfelt remembrance, Dead & Company paid tribute to the late NBA legend, Bill Walton, during their residency at the Las Vegas Sphere on Thursday night. The concert marked the band's first performance since Walton's passing on Monday, at the age of 71.
Known for his unwavering affection for the Grateful Dead and their offshoots, Walton had attended over 1,000 of their concerts throughout his life. His towering figure and larger-than-life personality made him a recognizable face among fellow Deadheads. Guitarists Bob Weir and John Mayer adorned their instruments with decals featuring Walton's iconic jersey number, 32, from his days in the NCAA and NBA.
For drummer Mickey Hart, Walton was more than just a passionate fan; he was a "best friend." Prior to taking the stage, Hart expressed his feelings, stating that the band would pulse, vibrate, and dance that night in honor of Walton, "The BIGGEST Deadhead in the world!"
During the second set's "Drums" section, a tribute to Walton was displayed on the screen above the band. Projected amidst a spiraling virtual drum circle, Walton's presence was felt by all. In previous performances, Walton had even joined Dead & Company onstage during the "Drums" segment.
The concert concluded with the iconic song "Fire On The Mountain," which was accompanied by a special visual tribute. Instead of the usual virtual scrapbook, the Sphere screen enveloped the stage in falling red flowers while photos of Walton with the band members were projected, alongside stacked pedals. As the song came to an end, the screen displayed "Walton 32" surrounded by roses.
The members of Dead & Company took a moment to acknowledge the heartfelt tribute before gracefully exiting the stage. Thursday night's concert served as a testament to the impact Bill Walton had on the band and the broader Deadhead community. His love for the music and his larger-than-life presence will be dearly missed, but his spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of Deadheads everywhere.
