In a surprising turn of events, Danny O'Donoghue, the frontman of The Script, found himself in the hospital after attempting to match drinks with the legendary crooner, Tom Jones. Despite being 40 years younger than Jones, O'Donoghue couldn't keep up with his drinking prowess.
The incident took place during their time as judges on the UK version of "The Voice" in the early 2010s. O'Donoghue shared that one night, he and Sir Tom decided to hit a hotel in Manchester for a night of celebration. They began sipping champagne around midnight and continued drinking until six in the morning.
Danny O'Donoghue revealed that each time they finished a bottle, Jones would promptly order another one, determined to keep the night going. O'Donoghue was hesitant to leave the table, as Jones invoked the great singers like Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Sammy Davis Jr, who were known for their extraordinary stamina when it came to drinking.
However, the morning brought a concerning revelation. O'Donoghue's heart had "flipped into a different rhythm." Alarmed, he rushed to the hospital where doctors diagnosed him with atrial fibrillation, a condition caused by excessive alcohol consumption.
As a result of his hospitalization, O'Donoghue had to take several days off from filming "The Voice" to recover. Despite the incident, he holds no ill-will towards Jones, stating that he could have and should have stopped drinking much earlier.
It's worth noting that Tom Jones recently celebrated his 84th birthday, proving that age has not slowed down his ability to enjoy a good drink. O'Donoghue, who is 43 years old, acknowledges that the veteran singer can still hold his own when it comes to throwing back drinks.
While there is no animosity between the two, it is likely that Danny O'Donoghue will think twice before accepting another invitation from Tom Jones for a night of indulgence.
