In a stunning display of determination, Danielle Collins emerged victorious at the Miami Open, winning the biggest title of her career and fulfilling a major goal before her upcoming retirement. The 30-year-old American, who reached the Australian Open final earlier this year, triumphed over No. 4 seed Elena Rybakina in a captivating final to secure her first-ever WTA 1000 event title, and her first title at any level since 2021.
Collins, who has faced numerous health challenges throughout her career, including rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis, revealed in January that this would be her final season on the professional tennis circuit. Despite her decision to retire, Collins has achieved significant milestones, including reaching a career-high ranking of world No. 7 and becoming the highest-ranked American female player at one point.
"I have always wanted to win every tournament that I have signed up for, but I do think that because it is my last year, I'm like, I really want to try to win a [WTA] 1000 this year," Collins expressed after the match. "That's really important to me. That's something that I talked a lot about with everybody close to me."
Entering the tournament as the world No. 53, Collins defied expectations and became the lowest-ranked woman to ever clinch the Miami Open. Displaying her trademark powerful hitting, Collins showcased her skills by saving multiple break points during crucial moments of the match. At 4-3 in the closely contested first set, she battled to hold serve and continued her resilience by saving another break point at 5-5, maintaining the pressure on Rybakina. Taking advantage of her opponent's mistakes, Collins seized three set points at 6-5 and claimed the first set.
The second set mirrored the intensity of the first as the players exchanged breaks of serve. Rybakina had an opportunity to turn the tide with two break points, but Collins held her ground and eventually converted her own break point to take a 5-3 lead. With unwavering focus, Collins sealed the victory on her fourth match point.
Competing on home soil, the Floridian enjoyed overwhelming support from the crowd, painting the atmosphere with a sense of camaraderie. "That was just surreal," Collins gushed, reflecting on the enthusiastic crowd. "I will never forget this day because of that."
Collins now joins the esteemed ranks of Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Venus Williams, Serena Williams, and Sloane Stephens as the sixth American woman to lift the Miami Open trophy. Despite the overwhelming success in Miami, Collins remains steadfast in her decision to retire.
"I feel like all of these questions are coming from such a good place, because I feel like a lot of people would like to continue seeing me play well," Collins explained. "But like I said, I have some health challenges, and with those health challenges, it makes things for me away from the court a little more difficult. I hope everyone can respect that. It's a very emotional and personal thing."
With her fairytale victory at the Miami Open, Danielle Collins leaves an indelible mark on the tennis world, proving her determination and resilience against all odds. As the illustrious chapter of her career comes to a close, Collins can revel in the knowledge that she accomplished one of her dreams before bidding farewell to the sport she loves.
