In a shocking turn of events, doctors have confirmed that cyanide was present in the blood of all six people who were discovered dead in a luxury hotel suite in Bangkok. After conducting an initial post-mortem examination, medical professionals stated that there was "no other cause" that could explain their deaths except for cyanide poisoning.
While further tests are being conducted to determine the intensity of the deadly chemical and to rule out any other toxins, investigators already discovered traces of cyanide on the teacups used by the victims, who were all of Vietnamese origin, including two individuals with dual US citizenship. The police suspect that one of the deceased was responsible for the poisoning, possibly driven by severe debt, although the identity of the perpetrator has not been revealed.
Professor Kornkiat Vongpaisarnsin from the Department of Forensic Medicine at Chulalongkorn University explained that the victims' lips and nails had turned dark purple, indicating a lack of oxygen, and their internal organs had turned "blood red," further confirming the suspicion of cyanide poisoning.
Dr. Chanchai Sittipunt, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine, emphasized the need to determine the exact amount of cyanide in the victims' blood. "But from what we have detected - from observation, internal organ check, and finding cyanide in the blood during the screening test - there is no other cause that would explain their deaths, except for cyanide," he declared during a press conference.
The deceased were discovered by housekeepers at the Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel in Bangkok on Tuesday evening. It is believed that they had been dead for between 12 and 24 hours prior to the discovery. The baffling incident swiftly garnered international attention, prompting Thailand's Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, to order an urgent investigation. He emphasized that the deaths were the result of a "private matter" and reassured the public that there was no immediate danger.
In an effort to piece together the events leading to the tragedy, the police revealed that two of the victims had loaned a significant amount of money, equivalent to tens of millions of Thai baht, to another individual within the group for investment purposes. They checked into the hotel over the weekend and were assigned five rooms, four on the seventh floor and one on the fifth floor. Although they were scheduled to check out on Monday, they failed to do so.
The police believe that on Monday afternoon, all six victims gathered in the room on the fifth floor. A waiter delivered food and tea to the room around 2:00 PM local time, which was received by one of the victims, Sherine Chong. The waiter recalled that Chong appeared to be under stress and refused his offer to make the tea. Shortly after, the rest of the group joined Chong in the room. No one else is suspected to have entered or left the room, as it was locked from within.
Law enforcement found no signs of a struggle, robbery, or forced entry. Apart from untouched plates of food and traces of cyanide in all six tea cups, the room remained undisturbed. It was also revealed that there was a seventh name on the hotel booking, identified as the younger sister of one of the victims. However, she had left Thailand prior to the incident and is not involved.
Relatives of the deceased mentioned that a couple, Thi Nguyen Phuong and Hong Pham Thanh, who owned a road construction business, had entrusted Chong with investment funds for a hospital building project in Japan. Police suspect that another victim, Dinh Tran Phu, a makeup artist based in Da Nang, had also fallen victim to a fraudulent investment scheme.
As investigations continue, the United States State Department has offered condolences and pledged to closely monitor the situation. Furthermore, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting Thai authorities with the case.
This tragic incident has left many questioning the motive behind the poisoning, but authorities remain determined to uncover the truth and bring justice to those responsible for these mysterious deaths.
