In a recent trade agreement, the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Rays have exchanged third basemen and prospects, solidifying their respective rosters for the future. The Cubs have sent Christopher Morel to Tampa Bay, while receiving All-Star Isaac Paredes in return. Additionally, the Cubs have included two prospects, pitchers Ty Johnson and Hunter Bigge, as part of the deal.
The acquisition of Paredes is expected to immediately bolster the Cubs' lineup, as they have been searching for a reliable third baseman since parting ways with Kris Bryant earlier this year. Jed Hoyer, president of the Cubs, expressed the team's intention to add players who can make an impact not only in the present season but also in the coming years. Paredes, a 25-year-old infielder, brings a proven bat to the team, having hit .247 with 16 home runs and 19 doubles this season.
Interestingly, Paredes was initially signed by the Cubs but was traded to the Detroit Tigers in a 2017 deadline move before getting the chance to play for Chicago. Now, he will finally join the Cubs as their starting third baseman.
Meanwhile, Morel, who had been playing third base for the Cubs this season, will now join the Rays. Despite showing improvements in his defensive skills, Morel's offensive production dipped after a promising start to his career. Currently hitting .199 with 18 home runs, he will have an opportunity to contribute to the Rays' lineup.
Both Morel and Paredes are under team control for several more seasons, ensuring their value for the long term. The Cubs have also included two pitching prospects in the trade. Hunter Bigge, 26, recently made his MLB debut after being drafted in the 12th round in 2019. Ty Johnson, on the other hand, was taken in the 15th round of the 2023 draft and has been pitching at the Class-A level this season.
This trade comes at a time when both teams are undergoing transitions. The Rays have already made several moves leading up to the trade deadline, including the recent departures of Jason Adam, Randy Arozarena, and Zach Eflin. Similarly, the Cubs, who currently sit in last place in the NL Central, acquired reliever Nate Pearson on Saturday, signaling their commitment to reshaping the roster for the future.
With this trade, both the Cubs and Rays are positioning themselves for success in the coming years. While Paredes brings immediate offensive contributions to the Cubs, Morel provides the Rays with defensive stability at third base. Additionally, the inclusion of pitching prospects adds further depth to each team's respective farm systems. Only time will tell how this exchange will impact the future of both organizations.
