Authorities in Owasso, Oklahoma, are investigating the death of Nex Benedict, a 16-year-old transgender student whose passing has garnered international media attention. Owasso police revealed that preliminary findings from the medical examiner's office suggested Benedict did not die as a result of trauma. However, details surrounding the cause of death are pending toxicology results.
Lt. Nick Boatman clarified that the police department did not rule out the possibility that a school fight could have played a role in Benedict's death. He emphasized that assumptions should not be made either way until further information is released. In response to misinformation circulating on social media, the department released video and audio recordings to dispel false claims surrounding Benedict's injuries.
No charges have been filed in connection with the case, and toxicology results, which could take months to receive, are awaited. Advocates are rallying in support of Benedict, alleging that bullying due to his gender identity and statewide policies targeting LGBTQ students may have contributed to his tragic death. Benedict's mother disclosed that he faced bullying because of his gender identity, using both he/him and they/them pronouns.
On February 7, the day of the altercation, Benedict described being attacked by three students after standing up to their bullying. The next day, a 911 call from Benedict's mother highlighted concerning symptoms prior to his passing. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to uncover the truth behind the circumstances surrounding Benedict's death.
