### Amtrak Train Derailment at Penn Station Causes Commuter Delays
An Amtrak train experienced a derailment incident as it departed Manhattan's Penn Station on Wednesday afternoon. This event resulted in significant delays for Amtrak and NJ Transit commuters and led to road closures around the vicinity of the station. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. when a set of wheels on the train slipped off the tracks just south of the busy transportation hub, according to Amtrak officials.
Amtrak spokesperson Jason Abrams confirmed that part of the derailed train remained on the platform, enabling all passengers to disembark safely and quickly. By approximately 4 p.m., travelers were being cautioned about 30-minute delays for trains moving in and out of Penn Station.
In response to the derailment, Amtrak advised customers affected by the delays that they could alter their train reservations by calling 1-800-USA-RAIL, without any additional fees. NJ Transit also announced that it would be cross-honoring tickets with both its bus service and private carriers to accommodate commuters during the disruption.
New York City's emergency notification system, Notify NYC, had earlier informed the public about the traffic delays, mass transit interruptions, and emergency activities near Penn Station. By late afternoon, a spokesperson from NYC Emergency Management tweeted that the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) had completed its operations near the station.
Fortunately, no injuries had been reported by mid-afternoon, according to NYC Emergency Management.
