In the wake of a devastating shooting at the Mad Butcher grocery store, the tight-knit community of Fordyce, Arkansas, is coming together to support one another as they face the temporary closure of their only grocery store. With limited nearby options for food, residents are grappling with the challenge of access to affordable and healthy groceries.
Despite the steady rain outside Fordyce High School, a dedicated group of volunteers braved the weather to distribute essential supplies to a long line of cars snaked around the parking lot. Jugs of milk and bags of groceries were passed out, offering some relief to those affected by the tragedy and the subsequent closure of the store.
The closure of Mad Butcher, following the shooting that claimed the lives of four individuals and injured eleven others, has left the community reeling. Fordyce, with a population of 3,200 people, already faced limited options for grocery shopping, with the closest supermarkets located at least half an hour away in neighboring cities. Many residents, particularly the elderly and those without reliable transportation, struggle to access these distant stores.
"Darrin Brazil, the school's basketball coach, along with two former classmates, organized the food pickup to help the community," said Brazil. The school, city facilities, and local churches have all stepped up to provide spaces for residents to collect groceries while the Mad Butcher undergoes clean-up and repairs.
This situation has brought attention to the issue of "food deserts," where communities lack access to affordable and nutritious food options nearby. Similar efforts were seen in Buffalo in 2022, following a mass shooting at a supermarket. In both cases, community members have united to provide support and overcome the challenges presented by these tragic events.
Roderick Rogers, a City Council member and pastor, emphasized the importance of this support, stating, "It's a basic need that people have. It's kind of bringing us together, to be honest. We're trying to respond with love to overcome this tragedy."
As the Mad Butcher undergoes repairs, the front of the store remains a somber reminder of the tragedy. A makeshift memorial, adorned with crosses, flowers, and candles, has been set up next to the parking lot, while a banner reading "#WeAreFordyceStrong" hangs beneath the store's name and green awning. Signs taped to the store's front doors communicate the temporary closure and ask for prayers for the community.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. The suspect, Travis Eugene Posey, 44, pleaded not guilty to charges of capital murder and attempted capital murder, and he is currently being held without bond in a neighboring county jail. Authorities have stated that Posey, armed with a handgun and a shotgun, did not appear to have any personal connection to the victims.
The volunteers working at the high school distribution site on Wednesday had personal connections to the victims or knew someone present during the shooting. The pain of the tragedy resonates deeply throughout the entire city of Fordyce, as the community continues to heal together.
Houchens Industries, the company that owns Mad Butcher, has announced plans to reopen the store in the coming week, according to local news reports. Residents driving through the school's parking lot expressed hope for a swift reopening, as they face unforeseen challenges and increased expenses due to the temporary closure.
Jayda Carlson, a resident picking up groceries with her grandmother-in-law, expressed the frustrations and uncertainties that many are feeling, saying, "You definitely don't know what to do. Am I going to have to spend more money on gas to get groceries and stuff that we need?"
In this time of grief and healing, the heartfelt efforts of the community, volunteers, and local organizations are a testament to the strength and resilience of Fordyce. As they come together to support one another, their determination and resolve will undoubtedly see them through the difficult days ahead.
