In January, beloved comedian and retired talk show host Jay Leno made the difficult decision to file for conservatorship over his wife Mavis' estate as she continues to battle advanced dementia. New documents obtained by Fox News Digital reveal the heartbreaking details of Mavis' current condition.
Mavis' court-appointed council, Ronald E. Ostrin, consulted with her neurologist, Dr. Hart Cohen, who disclosed that in addition to advanced dementia, Mavis sometimes struggles to recognize her husband Jay and even her own date of birth. Dr. Cohen has been providing care to Mavis since a car accident in 2018.
Ostrin's report also emphasized the strong bond between Jay and Mavis, with Dr. Cohen expressing that "Mr. Leno loves his wife very much, and waited to bring this matter out of respect for her. He said that Mr. Leno was 'such a nice man and treats [Mavis] like gold.'" Despite her cognitive impairment, Mavis still maintains a charming personality and expresses her desire to vote and continue her philanthropic work.
It is important to note that Jay Leno is not seeking conservatorship over Mavis' person, but solely over her estate. When questioned about this decision, Dr. Cohen and Leno's attorneys explained that Mavis is already receiving proper medical treatment with prescribed medications for her neurocognitive disorder. Therefore, no order for personal conservatorship is currently necessary. The purpose of preparing an estate plan is to ensure that in case something were to happen to Jay, a petition for conservatorship of Mavis' person can be promptly filed as per the established plans.
In recent years, Jay Leno has faced his fair share of health challenges. In November 2022, he suffered severe burns following a gasoline accident in his Burbank garage, requiring treatment at the Grossman Burn Center, including hyperbaric chamber therapy. Just a few months later, in January 2023, Leno revealed that he had been involved in a motorcycle accident, resulting in multiple broken bones, during a stand-up gig.
Jay Leno's decision to file for conservatorship over Mavis' estate highlights the difficult reality they face as a couple amidst her battle with dementia. Their unwavering love and support for one another continue to shine through, with Jay demonstrating his commitment to protecting and guiding Mavis during this challenging time.
