Christopher Nolan's historical epic, "Oppenheimer," continues its successful run in theaters, captivating new audiences around the globe. The film recently made its debut in its final market, Japan, where it raked in an impressive $2.5 million from 343 theaters over the weekend, securing the third spot on the country's box office charts.

Universal Pictures announced that "Oppenheimer" achieved the biggest opening weekend of 2024 for a Hollywood release in Japan, surpassing the previous records set by "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" ($1.6 million) and "Dune: Part Two" ($1.3 million). With this outstanding performance, the film's global box office earnings now stand at a staggering $965 million.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the genre and subject matter of "Oppenheimer." Despite being a three-hour, R-rated drama predominantly set in laboratories and American government halls, the film has managed to captivate audiences worldwide.

In addition to its box office success, "Oppenheimer" has also garnered critical acclaim, with the film winning seven Oscars, including the coveted awards for Best Picture and Best Director.

The film's release in Japan was not without its share of controversies. Given its subject matter, which revolves around American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer's role in the creation of atomic bombs that devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, there were initial speculations about whether it would be screened in Japan at all.

Distributor Toho-Towa initially decided not to be involved with "Oppenheimer." However, last December, Bitters End stepped in and acquired the rights to release the film in Japan after engaging in thoughtful dialogue regarding the subject matter. Bitters End has previously handled successful releases like the Oscar-winning "Parasite" and is currently showcasing Japan's Academy Award-nominated film, "Perfect Days."

Comparatively, "Oppenheimer" has shown promising initial ticket sales in Japan. It has outperformed Nolan's previous works like "Interstellar," "Batman Begins," "Dunkirk," and "The Dark Knight," performing on par with "The Dark Knight Rises" and "Tenet." However, it has fallen slightly behind the success of "Inception," which remains Nolan's top-grossing movie in Japan with $42 million. Nevertheless, "Tenet" and "Dunkirk" earned $25 million and $14.8 million in the country's cinemas, respectively.

As "Oppenheimer" continues to captivate audiences worldwide and collect accolades, it solidifies its status as a significant cinematic achievement and a testament to Christopher Nolan's storytelling prowess.
