Renowned BBC nature presenter and environmental campaigner, Chris Packham, has called on pop superstar Taylor Swift to reassess her "absurd" reliance on private jets. The plea follows Swift's attempt to silence a social media blogger who shared a log of her international jet usage, prompting criticism from Packham and others.
According to reports from the UK's Daily Mirror newspaper, Swift sent a cease and desist letter to Jack Sweeney, the blogger who had calculated and publicized her extensive travels on two private planes in 2023. It was revealed that the singer had covered a staggering 178,000 miles during that year alone.
Packham expressed particular frustration over Swift's one-day round trip from Tokyo to Las Vegas and back this February, a journey made to support her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, at the Super Bowl final. Private jets, Packham emphasized, contribute significantly to jet aviation fuel consumption and are known to be highly inefficient, especially when carrying only one person.
In his interview with The Mirror, Packham highlighted the missed opportunity for Swift to make a powerful statement regarding her environmental impact. He suggested that the singer could have acknowledged the changing times and pledged to sell her private jets, ultimately setting an example for her predominantly young audience.
Packham stressed that Swift, as an icon with significant influence, has the potential to lead by example and demonstrate a commitment to addressing climate concerns. While he acknowledged that she cannot be personally held responsible for climate breakdown, he maintained that her actions can have a substantial impact on her fan base.
Currently in the midst of her record-breaking Eras tour across Europe, Swift is scheduled to perform in Lisbon, Portugal, this weekend. The Mirror reached out to the singer for a comment regarding Packham's concerns.
Swift's response to the issue remains unknown at this time. However, with an increasing global focus on environmental responsibility, her stance regarding private jet usage and a potential shift towards more environmentally-friendly alternatives may become a topic of discussion among her fans and the wider public alike.
