In preparation for their series finale against the Cincinnati Reds, the Chicago Cubs have made several roster changes. The team has selected infielder David Bote's contract from Triple-A Iowa while making corresponding moves to send infielder Nick Madrigal to Iowa and place pitcher Adbert Alzolay on the 60-day injured list.

David Bote, who signed a five-year contract with the Cubs in 2020, is making his long-awaited return to the big leagues. Having last played in 2022, Bote showcased his abilities in 41 games, hitting four home runs and driving in 12 runs in 127 plate appearances. After spending the entirety of 2023 with the Iowa Cubs, he started the 2024 season there, impressing with seven home runs, 15 RBIs, and a notable slash line of .259/.342/.546 at Triple-A.

On the other hand, Nick Madrigal has been struggling during the 2024 season, prompting the Cubs to make the decision to send him down to Iowa. Madrigal's slash line of .221/.280/.256 this year reflects his difficulties at the plate. In his last 12 games with the Cubs, the infielder has gone 4-for-24, contributing to a negative-0.5 WAR for the season.

As for Adbert Alzolay, he finds himself on the 60-day injured list after suffering from a right forearm strain since mid-May. Alzolay had a challenging season, posting a 1-4 record and a 4.67 ERA in 18 appearances out of the bullpen. During those outings, he gave up 19 hits, allowed nine earned runs, and unfortunately, surrendered six home runs. While his return timeline remains uncertain, it is clear that Alzolay won't be back in action until at least mid-July.

These roster moves by the Chicago Cubs reflect their ongoing efforts to optimize team performance. The addition of David Bote brings a familiar face back to the big league roster, while Nick Madrigal will have the opportunity to refine his skills and regain confidence in Triple-A. Meanwhile, the Cubs will eagerly await Adbert Alzolay's recovery and hope to see him return to form once he overcomes his forearm strain.
