In a frustrating turn of events for the Chicago Cubs, pitcher Colten Brewer has been placed on the 60-day injured list after suffering a broken hand during Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander, who punched the dugout wall out of frustration, expressed remorse for his actions.
Brewer's unfortunate mishap occurred during the game, where he was charged with three runs, one of which was earned, on two hits and two walks in just 0.2 innings. The pitcher admitted that his intention was not to break his hand, but emotions got the best of him.
"I'll get frustrated and make mistakes. That's no excuse," said Brewer when addressing reporters. "There's a lot I can prove out there, that I'm willing not to do stuff like that. Emotions get the best of us sometimes."
The incident happened when Brewer took the mound in the third inning to relieve Kyle Hendricks, who had allowed two runs on four hits in two innings. However, Brewer struggled from the start, with the first three Angels hitters reaching base, including one due to a throwing error committed by Brewer himself. Another throwing error was made by first baseman Michael Busch in the same inning.
By the end of the third inning, the Cubs found themselves trailing 5-0. As the game progressed, the Cubs were unable to recover from the early deficit and ultimately lost 7-0 to the Angels. Angels' starter Tyler Anderson played a stellar game, striking out 10 Cubs over eight shutout innings.
This injury adds to the frustrations the Cubs have experienced throughout the season. With Brewer now sidelined for an extended period, the team will need to rely on other pitchers to step up and fill the void. The Cubs will be hoping for a swift recovery for Brewer as they navigate through what has been a challenging season thus far.
