In an effort to bolster their pitching rotation, the Chicago Cubs have added right-hander Shawn Armstrong to their active roster. The team claimed Armstrong off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals, making the acquisition official on Saturday.
Armstrong, who has had a solid season, brings a 3-2 record with a 4.85 ERA in 49 games for both the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cardinals. Impressively, he has delivered seven starts among those appearances. Over his last seven games, Armstrong has shown his dominance by pitching 6⅔ scoreless innings, allowing only three hits.
As part of the roster changes, the Cubs have decided to option right-hander Daniel Palencia to Triple-A Iowa. With Palencia temporarily out of the mix, the team aims to fine-tune their pitching staff with Armstrong's addition.
Furthermore, the Cubs have also made the decision to release catcher Tomás Nido. During his time with Chicago, Nido struggled at the plate, hitting only .128 in 17 games.
Shawn Armstrong, who will be turning 34 on September 11, has an impressive track record in the big leagues. He was initially chosen by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round of the 2011 amateur draft. Armstrong made his debut in 2015 and has since accumulated a total of 291 big league games under his belt. Throughout his career, he has played for various teams including Cleveland, Seattle, Baltimore, and Miami. Currently, his career stats stand at 11-7 with a 4.13 ERA.
The Cubs are optimistic about the potential impact that Armstrong can bring to the team. With his experience and solid recent performances, Armstrong's addition to the roster is expected to further strengthen the Cubs' pitching staff as they aim to secure victories down the stretch.
With the roster adjustments now in place, the Cubs are set to face the Washington Nationals with a renewed focus and determination to secure a win in their upcoming game.
