In an effort to bolster their roster for the future, the Chicago Cubs have made a significant move ahead of the MLB trade deadline. The Cubs acquired All-Star infielder Isaac Paredes from the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, keeping their promise to prioritize trades for the long term.
The Cubs, who have been listening to offers for veteran starter Jameson Taillon and other relievers, sent third baseman Christopher Morel, reliever Hunter Bigge, and pitching prospect Ty Johnson to the Rays in exchange for Paredes. Cubs president Jed Hoyer emphasized that their goal was to add players who would contribute not only this season, but for years to come.
Paredes joins the Cubs with an impressive track record, hitting .245 with 16 homers and a .792 OPS. He will provide an immediate boost to the Cubs' lineup and, being under team control until after the 2027 season, brings stability for the future. Paredes is currently earning $3.4 million this year.
Interestingly, the Rays had attempted to acquire Morel earlier during negotiations involving starter Tyler Glasnow but ultimately sent him to the Dodgers. On the other hand, the Cubs had previously signed Paredes as an amateur player, making his return to the organization even more notable.
This trade marks the sixth player that the Rays have dealt this month, indicating their willingness to sell despite being just 3 ½ games out of a wild-card berth. While the Cubs, currently sitting with a 50-56 record, have yet to make an official decision on their stance, they are expected to continue as sellers, particularly in the pitching department.
As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Cubs still have time to make additional moves. With six games behind a wild-card spot, the Cubs face the challenging task of balancing their immediate needs with their long-term vision. The trade deadline is set for 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, placing urgency on the Cubs to finalize their plans.
The acquisition of Isaac Paredes demonstrates the Cubs' commitment to building a strong foundation for the future. Only time will tell if this move, coupled with potential further trades, will pave the way for a resurgence and propel the Cubs back into contention in the coming seasons.
