**Dartmouth Sorority and Fraternity Members Face Charges After Student's Tragic Drowning**

A tragic incident has led to charges against a sorority at Dartmouth College and two fraternity members following the death of a student who drowned after attending an off-campus party. Won Jang, a 20-year-old from Middletown, Delaware, was reported missing in July after participating in the event. Following an extensive search by state and local emergency responders, his body was ultimately discovered in the Connecticut River.

The Hanover, New Hampshire police announced on Friday that the Alpha Phi sorority faces one count of facilitating an underage alcohol house. Additionally, two members of the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity have been charged with providing alcohol to a person under the age of 21. According to officials, the party was organized by Alpha Phi, with Beta Alpha Omega supplying the alcohol. It was noted that the majority of the party attendees were underage.

The incident escalated when several attendees decided to swim in the river after the party. A heavy rainstorm ensued, prompting most of the swimmers to leave. Tragically, Jang, who according to his family was unable to swim, was left behind. At the time of the incident, Dartmouth College took immediate action by suspending both the Alpha Phi sorority and the Beta Alpha Omega fraternity—suspensions that remain in place.

In a statement, Dartmouth College emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment. "Dartmouth has long valued the contributions that Greek organizations bring to the student experience, when they are operating within their stated values and standards," the statement read. "These organizations, as well as all Dartmouth students and community members, have a responsibility to ensure Dartmouth remains a safe, respectful, equitable and inclusive community for students, faculty and staff."

This tragic event has cast a spotlight on the responsibilities of student organizations and the importance of adhering to legal and community standards.
