### Lions Face Tough Test Against Titans' Defense with Key Offensive Changes
As the Detroit Lions prepare to face the Tennessee Titans this week, they know they're up against one of the most formidable defensive units they've encountered this season. Lions head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the challenge, stating, "This defense could potentially be the best defense we've faced up to date."
The Titans boast a robust run defense, ranked sixth by DVOA metrics. However, their secondary, while ranked 15th, is a potential area of opportunity for the Lions. Despite this, the Tennessee secondary is not to be underestimated, especially as the Lions adapt to the loss of wide receiver Jameson Williams, who is suspended for violating the league's performance-enhancing substances policy. Williams' absence complicates Detroit's offensive game plan, necessitating a standout performance from other wide receivers.
Kalif Raymond, Tim Patrick, and Allen Robinson will be crucial in filling the void left by Williams. "I would say, Allen Robinson," said Campbell when discussing potential replacements. "He's locked in and meticulous, which fires you up." Robinson, along with Patrick and Raymond, will need to step up significantly to support quarterback Jared Goff, who has relied on Williams' impact throughout the season.
The key to Detroit's victory lies in their passing game. Tennessee has one of the top statistical passing defenses this season, allowing just 6.3 yards per attempt. Yet, Detroit leads the NFL in passing yards per attempt at 9.3. Establishing the run game with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs could open up the passing lanes through effective play-action.
Interestingly, the Titans' Achilles heel seems to be their lack of turnovers. Despite allowing only 4.8 yards per play, they've forced just three turnovers this season, all credited to safety Amani Hooker. This inability to disrupt offensive drives could play in Detroit's favor.
Defensively, the Lions have an advantage. The Titans' offense ranks poorly across the board – 27th in DVOA, 29th in passing, and 18th in rushing. With star running back Tony Pollard leading Tennessee's ground game, Detroit's strong run defense will be vital. The Titans also struggle in the passing game, failing to reach 1,000 passing yards so far.
Uncertainty also surrounds the Titans' quarterback situation. Will Levis is a longshot to play, leaving Mason Rudolph as the likely starter. Rudolph's performance this season has been underwhelming, with only 300 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception from 34 completions. Additionally, Tennessee's receiver corps is depleted, with DeAndre Hopkins traded, Calvin Ridley nursing a foot injury, and Treylon Burks on IR.
As the Lions look to extend their winning streak, their ability to adapt and overcome these challenges on both sides of the ball will be crucial.
