In a growing trend that raises concerns over privacy and consent, renowned actors Tom Hanks and country music star Lainey Wilson have issued warnings to their fans about fraudulent advertisements that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to promote products without their consent.
Taking to Instagram, Tom Hanks shared a "public service announcement" where he alerted his followers to multiple ads circulating on the internet that falsely used his name, likeness, and voice to promote so-called miracle cures and wonder drugs. Hanks emphasized that these ads were created without his consent and were fraudulent, employing AI technology to deceive consumers. The actor, who personally deals with type 2 diabetes, reiterated that he only seeks medical advice from his board-certified doctor regarding his treatment and urged his fans not to be fooled or swindled by such misleading campaigns.
This is not the first time Hanks has dealt with his digital likeness being exploited without his permission. In October last year, he warned his fans about a dental company scam that featured an AI-generated version of himself endorsing their product. Hanks once again clarified his detachment from the promotion and urged caution among his followers.
Country music sensation Lainey Wilson also testified to Congress, shedding light on the alarming trend of companies using celebrity likenesses through AI technology to endorse products. Wilson revealed that her image was used to promote weight-loss gummies, despite her strong stance against such products. The artist expressed concern over the impact on her young fans and emphasized the importance of promoting self-acceptance and body positivity. She argued that it is unacceptable for her name, image, or voice to be appropriated and utilized in ways that go against her principles.
Wilson further highlighted the misuse of AI-generated content, such as musicians' voices being manipulated in "questionable settings" or singing lyrics they would never write. She emphasized that her art is a direct reflection of her unique qualities as an artist, and having them taken from her and used without her consent is a violation of her rights.
While acknowledging the potential benefits of AI, both Hanks and Wilson voiced their apprehension regarding its misuse for personal rights infringement. They expressed their hopes that stricter regulations and increased awareness would be implemented to protect celebrities and individuals from AI-generated scams.
As the prevalence of deepfake technology and AI-generated content in the advertising world continues to rise, the need for stronger safeguards and legal protections becomes ever more apparent. Celebrities like Tom Hanks and Lainey Wilson have taken a stand against these fraudulent practices, highlighting the urgent need for stricter regulations to preserve privacy, consent, and the integrity of personal identities.
