In a thrilling final at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, Casper Ruud emerged victorious against Stefanos Tsitsipas to lift his first ATP Tour title of the season. The Norwegian exacted revenge for his loss to Tsitsipas in the Monte-Carlo championship just a week ago, delivering a convincing performance with a 7-5, 6-3 straight-set victory on the clay court.

Ruud showcased his exceptional skills on the court, converting three out of six break points to assert his dominance. He proved to be the more consistent player from the baseline, displaying a classy all-around display that earned him the victory on Pista Rafa Nadal. This win also snapped Tsitsipas' impressive 10-match winning streak.

For Ruud, the victory was a long time coming. Having reached seven previous finals above the ATP 250 level without clinching a trophy, he expressed his joy at finally securing a title. "Honestly, this has been worth the wait," Ruud stated. The significance of winning in front of a packed stadium and on Rafa Nadal Court held a special meaning for him, as he had idolized the legendary Nadal during his childhood.

With his triumph, Ruud has now notched up 29 match wins this year, leading the Tour in victories. The 25-year-old has solidified his place as an early contender in this year's PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, climbing one spot to third in the rankings. This success comes on the heels of his previous achievement as a finalist at the Nitto ATP Finals in 2022.

Reflecting on his strategies against Tsitsipas, Ruud mentioned that he aimed to be more proactive on the court compared to their previous encounter in Monte-Carlo. He felt that in their earlier meeting, he was consistently on the back foot, allowing Tsitsipas too much control over the game.

Despite a challenging start and an early break conceded to Tsitsipas, Ruud quickly regrouped and took control of the match. He managed to break back in the sixth game and crucially secured a break in the 12th game, clinching the first set. Both players relied on their baseline game in the cool conditions of Barcelona, but it was Ruud who continued to dominate in extended rallies.

Tsitsipas, while admitting that he was not at his best during the tournament, commended Ruud's performance and acknowledged that his opponent played better tennis and deserved the victory. Tsitsipas, who has now lost all four Barcelona finals he has reached, still expressed satisfaction with his overall performance in the tournament.

With this win, Ruud has taken a 3-2 lead in his head-to-head series against Tsitsipas. The victory marks a significant milestone for Ruud, who last secured a title in Estoril in April 2023.

As the tennis season progresses, all eyes will be on Ruud to see if he can build on this success and continue his impressive form. With his breakthrough title and rise in the rankings, Casper Ruud has firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the ATP Tour.
