**Carlos Alcaraz Reaches French Open Quarter-Finals with Milestone Victory**
Carlos Alcaraz overcame his mental hurdles and showcased his exceptional skill, securing a spot in the French Open quarter-finals with a four-set win over American Ben Shelton. The match at Roland Garros, stretching over three hours and 19 minutes, saw the 22-year-old Spaniard clinch his 100th clay-court win on the ATP Tour with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
Reflecting on his performance, Alcaraz candidly revealed the mental battle he faced. "Honestly, today I fought against myself in the mind," he admitted. His strategy involved calming himself down during tense moments, which proved crucial in maintaining his grip on the match.
The Spaniard will now face Tommy Paul of the United States in the quarter-finals, following Paul's straight-sets win over Australia's Alexei Popyrin. Alcaraz acknowledged the increase in his performance level compared to his previous match against Damir Dzumhur and emphasized the need to oppose Shelton's formidable play.
The first set was a closely contested affair, advancing to a tie-break where Alcaraz fended off three set points before securing the win. Despite Shelton’s aggressive play earning him six break points in the opening game of the next set, Alcaraz held firm and clinched the crucial break late in the set.
The third set presented further challenges as Shelton, buoyed by a helpful net chord, saved a critical break point at 4-4 and subsequently claimed the set. Undeterred, Alcaraz quickly regrouped, breaking early in the fourth set and maintaining his lead to the end.
Later, American 15th seed Frances Tiafoe advanced to the quarter-finals with a win over Daniel Altmaier of Germany. Tiafoe will compete against eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who progressed past Denmark’s Holger Rune. For Musetti, this marks just the second time he has moved beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam.
The French Open continues to produce thrilling performances, with fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming quarter-final clashes.
